Saul Bass on the Web

Homage to legendary graphic designer

For me this is where it all began. I've always found the best way to learn a new thing is to have a project to work on. So when I was playing around with this thing called Flash I needed a theme to use, a project to make. Born from my love of film titles I chose the legendary Saul Bass as my subject.

The idea of the site was to use Saul Bass motifs to inform the design, without the technology being noticed. For that reason there's no traditional Flash "loading" messages instead I almost celebrate the loading of a section and treat the loading progress typographically, as if it's part of a title sequence. I also make a lot of the transition from one state to another. Transitions are always an important part of any design.

Whilst I don't update this site anymore I'm still very proud of it. It's not perfect, and there are bits of design that now make me cringe, but it led to many other things from a career point of view and for that reason alone I'll always have a special place in my heart for this little red rectangle.
